Now the company SOMSO from Sonneberg/Coburg has created the scientifically exact model of a bacterium. ” This model is the world’s first three-dimensional representation of a bacterium for teaching in schools and universities“, says Prof. Dr. Uwe Hoßfeld from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The biology didactician provided the model builders with his scientific expertise and wrote a booklet accompanying the model.
Models are indispensable teaching aids
” Although today we have the most modern visual processes at our disposal, many students memorize things best that they can hold in their hands ,” says Uwe Hoßfeld. Models such as that of the cherry blossom or the skeleton in anatomy lessons are still indispensable teaching aids. The model of a bacterium that is now being presented will fit in seamlessly.
The model is a good 31 centimeters long.
It was created on a scale of 310,000:1, and development took four years, not least because of the corona pandemic. The model was made from a special plastic and is hand-painted. All parts of a bacterium are sculpted and colored. Parts such as the vacuole or the DNA strand are clearly visible in the bean-shaped body. A scourge (flagella) and thread-like appendages, so-called pili, protrude from the outer covering.
For Prof. Hoßfeld, working on the bacterium model was a nice reminiscence of his former university teacher Prof. Dr. Joachim Ude. Together with Michael Koch, the cytologist published the book “The Cell” (first edition 1982). It contains a depiction of a bacterium, which the model builders – at Professor Ude’s express request – used as a template for their bacterium
